Don’t Box Me In

Completely frustrated describes me right now.
I left the IT field because I was burning out, like so many other IT professionals. Low pay, crappy hours and having to put up with the dregs of computer using society take their toll. Since I’ve left, my health has rebounded, my state of mind is better and really, why would I want to go back to killing myself for someone else?
So, I started looking for part time work. I’ve done the cashier thing before, and enjoyed it, I’ve done the fast food thing before, and enjoyed it as much as it can be enjoyed. But, everyone keeps wanting to put me back in that wee IT box. Why? Because it’s evidently damned hard to get people who know how to troubleshoot a computer. Yeah, I’ve got that training, but I have more than that. I wore the headset of tech support for a decade – much too long – and I’m not putting it back on.
But, people keep attempting to put me back into that box. To them I say:
No, I will NOT fix your computer. Not now, not ever.
We now return you to your normally scheduled programming.
